It is generally believed that the word 'massage' derives from the Arabic word 'mass' which means 'press softly'. Massage therapy helps us to relax and can help ease aches and pains. It helps release the body's natural painkillers and gives a sense of contentment. Who can benefit from massage?Massage is suitable for almost all adults, however there are certain conditions where you should avoid massage. You may need to get permission from your GP before any treatments can commence. Your therapist will begin any treatment with a consultation to make sure massage is right for you. What happens during a massage?A typical body massage session last for about one hour. On the first visit, you will be asked a number of well being questions including any injuries you have sustained or any medical conditions you have. You will be asked to undress, to your own level of comfort and modesty, and to lie on the couch under a sheet or large towel. During the session, the therapist will only expose the parts of the body to which treatment is being applied.
